Ukraine tests upgraded Vilkha-M MLRS

"State Kyiv Design Bureau "Luch", which is part of Ukroboronprom, together with Ukraine's military are conducting state tests of the Vilkha-M multiple launch rocket system at a landfill in Odesa region.

  

The rocket system was developed in close cooperation of the enterprises of the State Concern and Ukraine's private defense enterprises.

"Vilkha-M" is a modernization of the "Vilkha" MLRS, which was adopted into service by the Armed Forces in 2018, currently being serially produced. Modernization of the launch system is aimed at increasing the flight range and hit precision. Thus, upgraded 300 mm missiles hit ground targets at a distance of over 100 kilometers.

Tactical and technical characteristics of missiles, guidance systems and flight range were being checked during the tests. The work of MLRS and the results of the range practice on many parameters shall be evaluated by experts of the state committee. On the basis of the collected data, the commission will develop proposals to the Armed Forces of Ukraine to adopt this model in service.

The brand new HIMARS MLRS systems of the 81st Tactical Operational Missile Battalion of the Romanian Army

The systems are serve the 81st Tactical Operational Missile Battalion stationed in Focsani, in eastern Romania.

According to the defense ministry, a total of 18 systems hav been delivered under a contract from 2018. The $1.5 billion deal made Romania the first European customer for the system.

According to photographs shared by the defense ministry, all 18 HIMARS vehicles arrived in Constanta on February 20.

The Romanian defense ministry says the HIMARS acquisition will introduce an indirect fire support capability to the country’s armed forces, as well as boost its strategic cooperation with US by fulfilling its commitments within NATO.

A destroyed TPLF's PHL-03 MLRS

Pictures show a destroyed TPLF's (Tigray People's Liberation Front) PHL-03 (Chinese clone of the BM-30 Smerch MLRS) and reloading vehicle somewhere in Tekeze area, Central Tigray (Via "Ethiopia Map")

The TPLF used this to fire rocket artillery at air bases in Bahir Dar and Asmara. It was likely destroyed by a drone strike.

The TPLF obviously acquired this after a huge chunk of the Northern Command defected. This is a very sophisticated weapon with guided rockets which only professionally trained soldiers can operate.

As we reported previously, Ethiopia got the Chinese AR2 300mm MRL.

The PHL-03, also referred to as the Type 03, multiple launch rocket system is a Chinese version of a Soviet BM-30 Smerch. It was developed by NORINCO and reportedly entered service with the Chinese army in 2004-2005. Currently, it is one of the most powerful multiple-launch artillery rocket systems in the world. The PHL-03 is also being proposed for the export customers as the AR2.

The PHL-03 retains the original Russian configuration with 12 launch tubes for 300 mm artillery rockets. A standard rocket weighs around 800 kg and has a 280 kg warhead. The maximum range of fire is 70-130 km depending on the warhead type. Rockets are available with High Explosive Fragmentation (HE-FRAG), fuel-air explosive, and cluster warheads with anti-armor and anti-personnel submunitions. Cluster warheads may also carry self-targeting anti-tank munitions. A full salvo of this system could potentially cover an area of up to 67 hectares.

Even though the PHL-03 is a Chinese version of the Smerch, it appears that the Chinese overtook Russians in terms of rockets, as rockets of the PHL-03 have a longer range than those of the Smerch. Manufacturers claim that Chinese 300 mm rockets are not compatible with the Russian Smerch rockets as these use different propellant motors and components. This artillery rocket system has a digital fire control system. The PHL-03 is operated by a crew of 4.

The PHL-03 is mounted on a Wanshan WS2400 special 8x8 chassis. The reloading vehicle is based on the same 8x8 chassis and is fitted with a hydraulic crane. It carries 12 rockets.

Vilkha-M hit a target of 110 km with a deviation of 15 m (VIDEO)

During the next tests of the Ukrainian 300mm R624M "Vilkha-M" missile with a maximum range of more than 100 km, showed the video of the hitting missile at a target.

The tests were held on April 25 at the Alibay State Testing Area in Odesa Oblast in preparation for the state tests. The missile hit a target at a range of approximately 110 km with a deviation of 15 meters.

Vilkha-M is a project of creation of high-precision 300 mm jet ammunition with a maximum range of more than 100 km, which are produced by the enterprises of the defense-industrial complex of Ukraine in a closed cycle. The Vilkha-M is a modification of the Vilkha MLRS, which is already in service with the Ukrainian army. If for ordinary Vilkha firing range is 70 km, for Vilkha-M – 120 km.

Since 2015, three variants of missiles have been developed under the theme "Vilkha": "Vilkha-R" - an old extended-life 9M55 missile for a MLRS 9K58 "Smerch", R624 "Vilkha" - a missile in the 9M55 case with a new solid propellant engine, correction system based on GPS and inertial navigation system, additional gas-dynamic engines and R624M "Vilkha-M" - a completely new rocket - new hull, engine similar to the "Vilkha" adjustment system and gas-dynamic engines.

In connection with the entry of the Vilkha system in service to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the 107th Reactive Artillery Regiment in 2019 was reorganized into a brigade.

ჩრდილოეთ კორეაში წარმატებით განხორციელდა მორიგი სარაკეტი გამოცდა, რომლის დროსაც მსხვილკალიბრიანი ზცრს-იდან გაშვებულმა რაკეტამ 380 კილომეტრზე მოახერხა სამიზნის განადგურება. ფრენის დროს რაკეტამ 97კმ სიმაღლეს მიაღწია.
