US Army receive the first units of M-SHORAD system

The U.S. Army announced yesterday the fielding and testing of the service's new Mobile Short Range Air Defense (M-SHORAD) system, designed to defend maneuvering forces against unmanned aircraft systems, rotary-wing and fixed-wing threats.

The Department of the Army said the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, a subordinate unit under the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command based in Ansbach, Germany, has received four M-SHORAD systems.

The Army will field 144 systems to four battalions beginning this year, followed by an enduring capability for additional battalions.

The M-SHORAD integrates the turret with multiple selectable effectors onto a Stryker A1 vehicle. Future variants of M-SHORAD will include technology insertions such as directed energy, which will provide a capability against unmanned aircraft systems, rotary-wing and residual fixed-wing threats, rockets, artillery and mortars.
